1. Schnitzelbank

If I did not know better I would dismiss this hole-in-a-wall restaurant as just another 'wannabe' but going by the great reviews that it has been getting, I thought it was wise to check it out. What I found amazed me. Dishes such as Swabian Ravioli filled with meat and vegetables and egg noodles topped with cheese and sautéed onions swept me off my feet.

2. Café Knösel

This cafe is one of the oldest eats in Heidelberg having been established in in 1863 in the heart of the Heidelberg's Old Town. Its signature homemade cakes and fruit pies have been the best food for students and professors in that live around the area.

3. Kurfürstenstube

This restaurant is part of the larger hotel Europaischer Hof. Its signature dishes includes warm salad of octopus with jellied gazpacho, candied tomatoes, frisee lettuce and salad of bread; and glazed saddle of suckling with puree of vanilla and cauliflower that is served with roasted pretzel-dumplings. It is a gourmet diners' paradise.

4. Hackteufel

I was impressed by a dish called the "Sauerkraut Orgy" that is served at this restaurant. The dish consists of kraut, spicy sausage, crispy pork, dumplings, and pig’s stomach stuffed with potatoes, carrots, onions, pork, and spices. You would be impressed too if you get a chance to sample this German cuisine.

5. Schwarz das Restaurant

closing my top 5 best eats in Heidelberg is the Schwarz das Restaurant, a restaurant which has carved a niche for itself by serving desserts such as pizza with grilled strawberries, arugula, and lemon sorbet as well as main course dishes such as prime boiled beef with potatoes and radish salad.

I am sure I have not exhausted the number of good restaurants in Heidelberg. Feel free to share with us the great restaurants that have impressed you during your stay in the city.
