Italian culinary exploits are legendary. You just have to go to the restaurant district in your town and you will realize what I am talking about. If the pizza is not on the menu, then risotto or some other kind of Italian delicacy will be there. Below are the top Italian dishes that you must sample during your tour of Italy.
Italian culinary exploits are legendary. You just have to go to the restaurant district in your town and you will realize what I am talking about. If the pizza is not on the menu, then risotto or some other kind of Italian delicacy will be there. Below are the top Italian dishes that you must sample during your tour of Italy.
1. Pizza
The original version of pizza is known as the Margherita pizza and is named after Queen Margherita. It is made with tomato, mozzarella, and basil as the only toppings. Oh, and for those who think it is classy, sorry to disappoint you. It was a peasant food born in Naples.
2. Gelato
This is the Italian version of ice-cream. It has its origins in the frozen Roman and Egyptian deserts that were made from ice and snow. In 1565, a Florentine cook named Bernardo Buontalenti invented the modern gelato but it was not until the 1900s that the delicacy became popular.
3. Tiramisu
Visit any Italian restaurant in the US and you will be given a desert known as Tiramisu...have you wondered what its ingredients are? Well, it is made with biscuits soaked in coffee with layers of whipped mascarpone and egg yolks. Trust me; there is no other Italian invention that has captured the world of deserts as Tiramisu.
4. Risotto
This is a dish made of short grain rice combined with some thick broth. It has its roots in the Piedmont region of Italy. Producing a good risotto dish is not an easy task...it requires years of experience. If you want to experience Italian cuisine masterly, I would advise you to sample this dish.
5. Mortadella
This is a huge pork sausage that is served with flavors such as olives, pistachios, pepper, and jalapenos. The pork is heat cured to leave a very delicious taste in your mouth.
Of course there are hundreds of Italian dishes; the above are just the most popular. Other pasta dishes like lasagna will come next on the line. If there is one country I would visit for just food, it would be Italy.
