Japan has always led the pack in matters science, technology, arts, politics and food. This is why it is no wonder that the country features one of the most developed culinary sectors in the world. With all the top restaurants and hotels having set camp in Tokyo, you can consider Japan to be a melting pot of world culinary inventions.
The focus for this post however is on the authentic Japanese dishes. As always, Japanese cuisine has not disappointed. Its top dishes ranks along the Italian lasagna and pizza. Check out the list below.
1. Curry Rice
This delicacy was brought by the Indians in the 1912...or thereabouts but was quickly assimilated into the Japanese culture and later became the staple food in Japan. It is made up of Japanese vegetable, meat, or seafood and of course, rice. It can be as spicy as you want.
2. Soba
This is a dish comprising of thin white noodles that are served cold with wasabi. Alternatively, you can have it served with toppings such as tempura, duck, and mochi or mountain vegetables. The amazing thing is that the delicacy is very affordable...you will hardly spend more than US$8 on this delicacy.
3. Tokoyaki
Literally translated, Tokoyaki are octopus dumpling from Osaka. However, the dish Tokoyaki is much more than this. The dumplings are fired and then topped off with okonomiyaki sauce, mayonnaise, seaweed and fish shavings. It is one of the most popular festival dishes in Japan.
4. Mochi
Mochi are Japanese rice cakes that are used as toppings on dishes such as red bean soup, pizza, noodles etc. They are a very popular delicacy during Japanese New Year Celebrations.
5. Nigiri Sushi
Of course many people will have sampled the traditional Japanese sushi; but Nigiri sushi will take you to another level. Nigiri sushis are handmade rectangular rice boxes that are made that way so that some fish can be fixed in-between. Toppings such as tuna, tako, egg, unagi (eel), scallop and salmon are used to make the dish even more delicious.
Japanese cuisine is not all about sushi...on second thought, it is. But the sushi is made in so many variations that it will be unfair to say that Japanese culinary exploits starts and stops with sushi.
